Drive in Albania on a UK Licence 2026: 12 Months, 1968 IDP

Yes: a British driver can use a UK licence in Albania for visits of up to a year, and the UK Foreign Office suggests carrying a 1968 International Driving Permit with it, because the older 1949 permit is no longer accepted. For a British driver, the hardest part of Albania isn’t the documents or the famously rough roads — it’s that everything you do by instinct is mirrored.

The UK drives on the left; Albania drives on the right. That single switch is what most often catches British visitors out, and the danger window is your first day: pulling out of a petrol forecourt, joining a roundabout that now flows anticlockwise, the reflex glance the wrong way at a junction. Take your opening hour on quiet roads rather than in Tirana’s traffic, and stay consciously deliberate at every turn until “keep right” stops feeling like a decision.

The paperwork is lighter than the driving. Carry the 1968 IDP, your UK licence and your passport together; the permit can only be bought in the UK, so arrange it before you fly. Alcohol is where the gap from home is widest. The UK works to 0.08 (lower in Scotland); Albania’s limit is far lower, and the road code amendments of Law 58/2026, in force since 7 August 2026, raised fines and made licence loss permanent for a repeat offender caught above 0.5 grams per litre. Speeds are low and the roads don’t always match their signs.
