Can a British Driver Use a UK Licence in Afghanistan? — IDP + the Right-Side Switch

This page answers the licence question honestly, but it has to start with the bigger one: Afghanistan is not a routine self-drive destination, and for a British traveller the decisive factor is security, not paperwork.

For most British visitors the realistic answer to “should I drive here?” is shaped by safety conditions on the ground, not by licence rules. Treat everything below as the licensing and road-law picture for completeness, not as encouragement to set off without that check.

The licence question

On the documents: a UK licence paired with an International Driving Permit is the recognised basis to drive, as Afghanistan accepts the IDP as a translation of a foreign licence. You would carry your UK licence, the IDP and your passport together. Arrange the IDP in the UK in advance.

The road-law basics we can verify

Afghanistan drives on the right, the opposite of the UK, so a left-to-right side switch applies — reflexes at junctions, roundabouts and overtaking all need relearning. The country enforces a zero-alcohol rule for drivers (0.0 BAC), in line with the wider prohibition on alcohol, so do not drink at all before driving. Posted speeds where signed run to around 50 km/h in towns, 80 km/h on rural roads and 100 km/h on the fastest stretches, though signage and surfacing are inconsistent, so drive to the road rather than the number. The emergency number is 112.
