Mexico has no winter-tyre law. Winter storms in the northern sierra, mainly Chihuahua, can close roads because of snow and ice; closures, not tyres, are the practical issue.
Mexico has no winter-tyre law, and on the great majority of its roads the question never arises. The exception is the northern sierra, above all in Chihuahua, where winter storms put snow and ice on the asphalt. There, the response is closure: the state shuts affected sections until the ice clears, rather than letting vehicles through on chains or winter tyres.
Where winter actually reaches the road
Mexico City, the coasts, the Yucatán and the central highway network do not get road ice in any normal winter. The high, dry north-west is different. Chihuahua’s state government reports road closures for snow and frozen asphalt during the tormentas invernales that cross the state each winter:
- In one storm, the state civil protection agency kept 35 road sections closed at the same time because of snow and freezing on the carriageway.
- Snowfall in the north-west of the state has closed the Janos–Agua Prieta and Janos–Ascensión routes, and other storms have shut Puerto San Luis and the Madera–El Largo road.
During those closures, the National Guard and state and municipal police hold the sections and redirect traffic.
What to do instead of fitting winter tyres
If a winter route takes you through the Chihuahua sierra, towards the Copper Canyon or on the Janos routes to Sonora, the useful preparation is timing, not tyres: watch the state’s closure notices in the days before, carry water, warm clothing and a full tank, and be ready to wait for a reopening rather than looking for a way round. For everything else in Mexico, ordinary tyres in good condition are what you need.
