Luxembourg has no winter-tyre calendar. The obligation is triggered by the road: on black ice, packed snow, slush, or patches of ice or frost, a car may only be driven on winter tyres fitted to all wheels. Tyres marked M+S, M.S or M&S, or bearing the alpine symbol, qualify. The rule applies to every vehicle on Luxembourg’s roads, whatever its registration, and the fixed fine is EUR 74.
Five road conditions, no dates
The text is precise about what switches the rule on: verglas (black ice), neige tassée (packed snow), neige fondante (slush), and plaques de glace ou de givre (patches of ice or frost). If none of those is present, a car on summer tyres is legal, in January as in July.
That makes the practical question different from countries with a fixed window. You are not checking the date; you are checking whether a frosty morning on the Ardennes plateau in the north, or an icy bridge on the A6, will put the car in breach before you reach the office.
What the tyres must be
- A winter marking: M+S, M.S, M&S, or the mountain-and-snowflake alpine symbol.
- Same type on all four wheels — two winter tyres on the drive axle and two summer tyres on the other does not comply.
Heavy vehicles, buses and motorhomes above 3,500 kg are covered too.
Commuters from three countries
Luxembourg’s roads carry heavy daily cross-border traffic, and the rule makes no distinction by plate. A French, Belgian or German car on summer tyres that meets frost at the border has the same EUR 74 problem as a local one. For daily cross-border drivers through the winter months, a set of winter or marked all-season tyres from late autumn is the simplest way to stay on the right side of both countries’ rules.
