No winter tyres are needed in Egypt. There is no rule, no season and no snow on the road network. The hazards are heat, sand and night driving.
Why the question never comes up
Egypt’s roads run through desert and the Nile valley. There is no winter tyre law to comply with, no chain requirement on any route and no stud rule, because there is nothing for any of them to deal with. Rental fleets run the same tyres in January as in July.
The problem is the opposite of cold. Sustained heat on long straight roads such as the desert highways between Cairo, Alexandria and the Red Sea raises tyre pressure and ages rubber faster than mileage does. A tyre can show plenty of tread and still be unsafe because the compound has hardened and cracked.
What to check before a long drive
- Date code. The last four digits on the sidewall give the week and year of manufacture. An old tyre in a hot climate is a bigger risk than a worn one.
- Sidewalls. Look for cracking, bulges and cuts from road debris.
- Pressures, cold. Check them in the morning before setting off, not after an hour on hot tarmac.
- Spare. Desert roads have long gaps between services; make sure the spare is inflated and the jack is in the car.
Driving advice that matters more than tyres
The UK government’s travel advice tells visitors not to drive outside main cities and resorts at night, notes that accidents are common because of variable road conditions and dangerous driving, and says off-road desert travel needs a qualified guide and a permit from the Ministry of Interior. For UK licence holders it advises carrying the 1949 international driving permit together with the licence, valid for up to 6 months.
