One document is rarely enough
Nothing about a US license is unacceptable to Spain. The problem is legibility: a Guardia Civil officer at a roadside stop, or a rental agent in Málaga, needs to read the categories on it, and a state-issued card in English does not do that job. The standard fix is an International Driving Permit, which is simply a certified translation in booklet form; a sworn Spanish translation is the accepted alternative. Either way, the IDP is never valid on its own — it accompanies the licence, it does not replace it.
Get the IDP from AAA before you fly. It cannot be issued once you are in Spain, and a booking confirmation is not a substitute at the rental desk.
The Age Trap
Spain’s minimum age to drive a car is 18. UK government travel advice is explicit: “To drive a car or a motorcycle over 125cc in Spain you must be 18 years of age or above, and at least 16 years old to ride a motorcycle up to 125cc” (FCDO travel advice). The much lower ages you may see quoted belong to mopeds, not cars.
This matters for American drivers in particular, because several US states license drivers at 16. A 17-year-old with a full home-state licence is not entitled to drive a car in Spain, and rental companies add their own floor on top — typically 21, with a young-driver surcharge that runs to age 25.
How Long Can You Drive?
Six months as a visitor. Take up residence and the clock changes character entirely: you then have to deal with an exchange or a Spanish test, depending on whether your state holds a reciprocity agreement.

Pay within 20 days and halve it
Spanish traffic fines carry a standing early-payment discount: accept the fine and settle within 20 days and it drops by 50%. Appealing forfeits that discount, so the arithmetic on a contested ticket is worse than it first looks — a EUR 200 fine is EUR 100 if you pay quickly and EUR 200 if you argue and lose.
The DGT watches from above
Spain’s traffic authority runs drones and helicopters alongside unmarked cars fitted with roof cameras. Enforcement is not confined to the visible grey boxes at the roadside, and phone use and seatbelt offences are photographed from above as readily as speeding.
The 90 km/h secondary roads
In 2019 Spain dropped the limit on single-carriageway roads outside built-up areas to 90 km/h. Older guidebooks and some sat-nav databases still carry 100, which is exactly the kind of quiet discrepancy that produces a ticket in the post.
Digital licences are not accepted
Spain requires the physical card. A photograph of your licence on a phone, or a state-issued digital licence app, is not a valid document at a roadside stop.
