The IDP exists for the driver whose licence is in Japanese, Arabic or Thai — it supplies the English translation the law wants. If yours is already in English, it supplies nothing you do not have.

Some agencies require an IDP regardless, and most add conditions the law does not: a year of driving experience, a higher minimum age than 18, and a young-driver surcharge. Read the terms before you book rather than discovering them at the counter in Johannesburg.

Tolls are routine
Many of the main intercity highways are tolled, including the N1 and N3 corridors. Rental cars may or may not carry an e-tag; ask, and carry a card, because the toll plazas are frequent on a long drive.
Left-hand traffic takes a day
Roundabouts turn clockwise, the fast lane is the right one, and on a local car the indicator and wiper stalks are likely swapped. Most incidents involving foreign drivers happen at junctions within the first day. Take the first morning slowly and the rest of the trip is easy.
