Yes, but only with an IDP. Your US license alone is not sufficient in Japan. Your license is valid for up to 12 months.

It must be the 1949 IDP — and Japan drives on the left

Japan accepts your US license only with an International Driving Permit issued under the 1949 Geneva Convention — the type AAA and AATA issue in the States — valid for up to 12 months. Get the right one before you fly; you can’t obtain it in Japan. Two road realities for US drivers: Japan drives on the left, and the expressways are tolled and genuinely expensive (most cars use an ETC transponder, which a rental can add). Enforcement is quietly thorough with nationwide orbis cameras, and ordinary fines are paid at a convenience store. Stay left, budget for tolls, and Japan is calm, orderly driving.

US License Validity in Japan

Japan requires all non-local drivers to carry an International Driving Permit (IDP) together with their original license.

Apply for your IDP at AAA offices. It costs around $20 and is valid for one year.

How Long Can You Drive?

Visitors from the US can drive on their home license for up to 12 months in Japan.

After this period, you will need to apply for a local driving license.

Important Notes

IDP required (1949 Geneva Convention only). US, UK and many EU licences need specific IDP. Drives on the left.

What Most Guides Don’t Tell You

What Happens at the Rental Desk

Rental companies in Japan almost always ask for an International Driving Permit alongside your home licence. Without one, some agencies will refuse to hand over the keys, regardless of the legal requirement.

If You Are Stopped by Police

Japan drives on the left. Officers may approach from the passenger side. Keep your documents within reach.

Police in Japan can issue on-the-spot fines. Present your licence, IDP (if carried), passport and rental agreement. Officers are generally helpful with tourists, but missing documents can trigger a formal report.

The Duration Trap

Your home licence is valid for 12 months in Japan. After that, you must apply for a local licence. Overstaying and driving on an expired foreign licence makes you uninsured and liable for a fine.

If you plan a long stay, start the local licence application early. The process often involves a medical check, a theory test in the local language, and significant waiting times.

Driving Age Mismatch

The minimum driving age in Japan is 18. If your home country issues licences at a younger age, your licence is not valid here until you reach the local threshold.

This also affects minimum rental age. Most agencies in Japan require drivers to be at least 21, and charge a young-driver surcharge up to age 25.

Digital Licences

Japan does not accept digital or smartphone-based driving licences. You must carry the physical card. A screenshot of your licence is not a valid document.

Driving on the Left

If you normally drive on the right, Japan will feel disorienting at first. Roundabouts flow clockwise, the overtaking lane is on the right, and windscreen wipers and indicators may be swapped on local cars.

Most accidents involving foreign drivers happen at junctions and roundabouts within the first 24 hours. Take it slowly.
