Your US licence is valid in Italy only with an International Driving Permit or an official Italian translation (Codice della Strada art. 135). Missing it costs EUR 408-1,634.
In Italy the IDP is a legal condition, not advice. Article 135 of the Codice della Strada lets a US licence holder drive only if the licence travels with an International Driving Permit or an official Italian translation. Get stopped without either and the fine is EUR 408 to 1,634 (CdS art. 135).
What article 135 actually requires
The rule covers every licence issued outside the EU and EEA. Paragraph 1 sets three conditions at once:
- the licence covers the vehicle you are driving;
- you have not been resident in Italy for more than a year;
- the licence is accompanied by an international permit or an official translation into Italian, and both documents are in date.
Paragraph 2 adds that the permit must be issued by the authority of the country that issued your licence, in the format of a convention Italy has signed. For American drivers that means the IDP from AAA or the American Automobile Touring Alliance, obtained before departure.
The price of forgetting it
Paragraph 8 of article 135 sets the fine for driving without the permit or translation at EUR 408 to 1,634. That is on top of whatever else you were stopped for. Rental desks usually ask for the IDP too, but the legal risk arises at the roadside, not at the counter.
Visitors versus residents
The one-year figure you will see quoted belongs to residents. A tourist can keep using the US licence plus IDP for the whole trip. Someone who registers as resident in Italy can drive on the US licence for up to a year from taking residence; after that it no longer counts, and paragraph 11 applies the penalties for driving without a valid licence.
Suspensions follow you
If you commit an offence that would suspend an Italian licence, paragraphs 5 and 6 let officers withdraw your US card on the spot and the prefect issues a ban on driving in Italy for the same period.
Age
Italy issues category B car licences from 18, and a foreign licence does not let a younger driver drive a car here. Hire companies set their own, usually higher, minimum ages.
