The most repeated mistake about driving in France is the idea that an American licence expires twelve months after you land. It does not. A three-week holiday never starts that clock. Moving to Lyon for a job does.
For a visitor, then, the question is not how long but in what language. French rules expect the document to be rédigé en français or accompanied by an official translation. An International Driving Permit is exactly that translation in booklet form, which is why it is the usual answer — but a sworn translation does the same job.

France treats radar detectors and detector apps as illegal, with fines reaching EUR 1,500. Navigation apps sold in France comply by showing broad danger zones rather than pinpointing a camera. The fine bands are flat, then they are not
Up to 20 km/h over costs EUR 68 and 21 to 30 km/h over costs EUR 135. Beyond 50 km/h over the character changes completely: EUR 1,500 and a court appearance, with immediate confiscation of the licence possible at the roadside.
