You need an International Driving Permit (IDP) alongside your UK license to drive in Thailand. Your license is valid for up to 3 months.

Left-hand drive is the easy part — the IDP isn’t

Your UK licence on its own isn’t enough in Thailand: you legally need an International Driving Permit carried alongside it, valid for up to 3 months. One thing in your favour — Thailand drives on the left, like the UK, so that part feels natural. The catch is the same as everywhere here: police checkpoints in Phuket, Pattaya and Chiang Mai fine drivers without an IDP, and if you rent a scooter or motorbike (as most visitors do), your IDP must include the motorcycle category or you’re both uninsured and illegal. Pick the permit up from the Post Office before you travel.

Driving in Thailand with a UK License

An IDP is mandatory for British drivers visiting Thailand. Your UK license alone is not legally sufficient.

You can obtain an IDP from the Post Office or AA before your trip. The permit translates your license into multiple languages and is recognized internationally.

How Long Can You Drive?

Visitors from the UK can drive on their home license for up to 3 months in Thailand.

After this period, you will need to apply for a local driving license.

Important Notes

IDP required. Valid for the period of your entry permit. Drives on the left.

What Most Guides Don’t Tell You

What Happens at the Rental Desk

Rental companies in Thailand almost always ask for an International Driving Permit alongside your home licence. Without one, some agencies will refuse to hand over the keys, regardless of the legal requirement.

If You Are Stopped by Police

Thailand drives on the left. Officers may approach from the passenger side. Keep your documents within reach.

Carry your driving licence, IDP (if applicable), passport and rental papers at all times. A photocopy is not accepted as a substitute in Thailand.

The Duration Trap

Your home licence is valid for 3 months in Thailand. After that, you must apply for a local licence. Overstaying and driving on an expired foreign licence makes you uninsured and liable for a fine.

If you plan a long stay, start the local licence application early. The process often involves a medical check, a theory test in the local language, and significant waiting times.

Driving Age Mismatch

The minimum driving age in Thailand is 18. If your home country issues licences at a younger age, your licence is not valid here until you reach the local threshold.

This also affects minimum rental age. Most agencies in Thailand require drivers to be at least 21, and charge a young-driver surcharge up to age 25.

Digital Licences

Thailand does not accept digital or smartphone-based driving licences. You must carry the physical card. A screenshot of your licence is not a valid document.

Driving on the Left

If you normally drive on the right, Thailand will feel disorienting at first. Roundabouts flow clockwise, the overtaking lane is on the right, and windscreen wipers and indicators may be swapped on local cars.

Most accidents involving foreign drivers happen at junctions and roundabouts within the first 24 hours. Take it slowly.
