Heavy vehicles are capped at 80 km/h against cars at 130 — a 50 km/h differential, the widest in the region. On a two-lane carriageway that gap closes faster than it looks.

Mandatory equipment

Buy the e-vignette before you cross

You cannot legally use a Hungarian motorway without an e-matrica. Buy it from the state seller nemzetiutdij.hu, at a petrol station near the border, or through an official app; a short-stay pass is the usual choice for a trip through, and the current tariff is published on that site. It is tied to your number plate, so there is nothing to stick on the windscreen — the gantry cameras check automatically. Buy it before you join the M1, M7 or M5: a few minutes on the motorway without one is enough for an automatic fine.
