Argentina Speeds 2026: 130 on Autopistas, 40 on Streets

Argentina writes five limits, not three. Article 51 of Ley 24.449 sets 40 km/h on streets, 60 on avenues, 110 on rural roads, 120 on semiautopistas and 130 on autopistas.

The road class is the limit

Most countries give you urban, rural and motorway. Argentine law is more granular, and the distinctions are real rather than decorative:

The trap for a visitor is the urban pair. A wide, multi-lane city street in Buenos Aires looks like an avenue and may legally be a calle, where the limit is 40 km/h. The signs are the authority; the width is not.

Distance Is the Other Half of the Story

The numbers matter less than the scale. Ruta 40 runs the length of the country, much of it single-carriageway with hundreds of kilometres between fuel stops, and a drive from Buenos Aires to Bariloche is measured in days rather than hours. Fatigue, not speed, is the dominant risk on those routes, and the 110 km/h rural limit is a ceiling rather than a target on gravel-shouldered two-lane road.

Expect peaje toll plazas on the main corridors and police checkpoints at provincial boundaries, where documents are checked as a matter of routine.

Speeding penalties

• 10 km/h over: ARS 10,000–30,000 (approx. EUR 10–30), varying by province
• 20 km/h over: ARS 30,000–90,000 (approx. EUR 30–90)
• 30 km/h over: ARS 90,000 and upwards, with licence suspension

Enforcement and the fine schedule are provincial, so the same excess costs different money in Córdoba and in Mendoza.

What Most Guides Don’t Tell You

Alcohol: zero since 2023

Law 27.714, published on 3 May 2023, rewrote article 48 of the national traffic law: driving with a blood alcohol level above zero is prohibited. The old 0.05 national figure no longer applies, so one drink is enough to break the law.

Lorries are 50 km/h slower than you on an autopista

Cars at 130 and lorries at 80 make a closing speed of 50 km/h on the right-hand lane. On a two-lane autopista at dusk, that is the number worth having in mind before committing to an overtake.

An international permit is expected

Argentina asks foreign visitors to carry an International Driving Permit alongside the national licence, and rental desks generally want to see both. The permit is a translation, not a substitute, so it is worthless without the original.

Carry the equipment list

Warning triangle, reflective vest, first aid kit, fire extinguisher and spare bulbs are all required, and a routine checkpoint stop frequently becomes an equipment inspection. Each missing item is its own offence.
