About TyreMap

TyreMap is the most comprehensive free resource for driving regulations worldwide. We compile, verify and maintain detailed driving data for 195 countries and all 50 US states, covering speed limits, traffic rules, tyre requirements, mandatory equipment, blood alcohol limits, license requirements, emergency contact numbers and much more.

Our platform serves millions of drivers, travellers, fleet managers and automotive professionals who need accurate, up-to-date driving information before they get behind the wheel in an unfamiliar country.

Our Mission

Driving laws vary dramatically from country to country. A rule that keeps you safe in Germany could earn you a fine in France. Winter tyres that are optional in Spain are mandatory in Austria. The blood alcohol limit that is legal in the UK would get you arrested in Poland.

TyreMap exists to bridge this knowledge gap. Whether you are planning a European road trip, relocating to a new country, renting a car abroad, or managing an international fleet of vehicles, we provide the information you need in one clearly organised place. Our goal is to make every driver safer and more confident on foreign roads.

What We Cover

Our database spans a wide range of driving-related topics for each country:

  • Speed Limits — Urban, rural and motorway speed limits with notes on variable limits, school zones and construction zones
  • Tyre Laws — Winter tyre requirements, mandatory periods, minimum tread depth, studded tyre rules, all-season tyre acceptance and required markings (M+S vs 3PMSF)
  • Traffic Rules — Driving side, right-of-way rules, roundabout priority, overtaking regulations and lane discipline
  • Mandatory Equipment — Warning triangles, reflective vests, first aid kits, fire extinguishers, spare bulbs, headlamp deflectors and breathalysers
  • Blood Alcohol Limits — Legal BAC limits for standard drivers, professional drivers and novice drivers
  • License Requirements — Minimum driving age, International Driving Permit (IDP) requirements and licence reciprocity agreements
  • Penalties and Fines — Speeding fines, drink driving penalties, phone use violations, seatbelt fines and red light violations with actual fine amounts
  • Emergency Numbers — Police, ambulance, fire and general emergency numbers for each country
  • US State Laws — State-by-state driving regulations for all 50 United States, covering speed limits, cell phone laws, DUI limits and more

Our Data Sources and Methodology

Accuracy is the foundation of everything we do. Our data is compiled from multiple authoritative sources:

  • Government sources — Official transport ministry websites, national road safety agencies and published legislation for each country
  • International organisations — The World Health Organization (WHO) Global Status Report on Road Safety, the International Transport Forum (ITF), the European Commission transport database and the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE)
  • Motoring organisations — AA, RAC, ADAC, ACI, ANWB and other national automobile associations that publish country-specific driving guides
  • Community data — OpenStreetMap community contributions for road infrastructure and speed limit data
  • Embassy and consulate sources — Travel advisory information from diplomatic services

Every data point is cross-referenced against at least two independent sources before publication. When sources conflict, we prioritise official government publications and note any discrepancies. Our editorial team reviews and updates the database regularly to reflect changes in legislation.

For a detailed breakdown of exactly how we source, verify and maintain this data — including the official sources behind our 596 emission-zone records, our verification workflow and the automated weekly freshness engine — see our Data Methodology page.

Disclaimer

While we make every effort to keep our data accurate and current, driving regulations change frequently. Laws may be amended, fines may be updated, and new requirements may be introduced at any time. TyreMap is provided for informational purposes only and should not be considered legal advice.

Always verify current regulations with official local authorities before driving in any country. This is especially important for temporary changes such as seasonal winter tyre requirements, construction zone speed limits and newly introduced traffic regulations.
